General overview of our Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) Role:

The Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) is a key member of the Nursing Team in assisting and supervising residents in all activities of daily living. This individual ensures the expert care and comfort of our patients. This individual motivates the resident to participate in ADLs to improve and maintain their independence and self-esteem.

The RPN serves as the nursing leader and educator on the unit. She/he directs all care related items from admission through discharge. The RPN guides the medical team (MD, LPN and CNAs) as well as all clinical disciplines in a coordinated effort with the resident and family to create a comprehensive interdisciplinary individualized plan of care and ensures the EMR reflects the same. Through keen observation of any actual and potential changes in condition, the RPN together with the other members of the clinical team will respond and react timely and according to protocol to prevent re-hospitalizations and potential emergency situations. In the face of an emergency situation, the RPN responds efficiently and calmly and acts as the leader in the rapid response or emergency response team as appropriate.

The RPN educates and reinforces clinical competencies of nursing staff in areas such as wound care, ostomy care, foley catheter insertion and care, medication administration through all routes including G-tube and IVs, trach care and suctioning. Exhibits proficiency, or working towards proficiency, in all nursing functions to be carried out. Performs tasks that cannot be done by an LPN such as IV insertion, PICC line care, GT and suprapubic catheter reinsertion, initiate care plans and review the data and sign off on assessments done by the LPN.

The nurse's performance will be evaluated in relation to the ability to demonstrate procedures or behaviors with proficiency and excellence. The underlying principle of clinical excellence is the careful balance of optimizing safety, quality of life and clinical best practices in a patient specific way. Therefore, nurses are evaluated in relation to these measures as observed during the orientation period and throughout the year by their manager.
